Former UFC welterweight champion Leon "Rocky" Edwards has claimed that his UFC London main event fight against Sean Brady is for the spot of number one contender.
Edwards lost his title against current champion Belal Muhammad in a rematch at UFC 304 last July, and now, the Englishman is calling for the trilogy fight.
"Rocky" told his YouTube channel: "If Jack goes out and gets a win, it’ll open up the division more – that’ll be the perfect fight for my next. If Belal beats him, then the rematch is there as well. I’ve talked to the UFC, and they’ve said that this is a number-one contender fight. When I win this, I fight for the title.”
Edwards was originally scheduled to fight Jack Della Meddalena on the London card, but the Aussie was bumped up to a title shot at UFC 315 in Montreal.
The Brit also revealed that he wanted the title fight at UFC 315, but felt that the London event had been built around him, as he said:"I heard about the replacement fight a couple of weeks before [it was announced]. I was trying to step into fight Belal, but I know that they’ve sold London around me.
"It was difficult to take me off the card and leave Jack [Della Maddalena] on the card; and because it would be weird to let Jack headline London.”
